Southern Expressway Extension

City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri

The Southern Expressway extension completes the construction of a major arterial street from Route 74 to US Highway 61 (South Kingshighway). This arterial will provide access to the new high school and vocational school campus and other undeveloped property in southwest Cape Girardeau. The project is currently under contract for $690,471.07, which was under the engineer’s estimate of $861,714.45.

Originally planned in the late 1980’s, the roadbed was graded as part of the Southwest Trunk Sewer project. However, the original design was modified from a 40-foot commercial street to a four (4) lane 48 foot wide arterial. The project is approximately 2,800 feet in length and will include construction of a 48-foot wide concrete pavement section with upright curbs. An extensive storm sewer system was designed to accommodate pavement drainage and enclose existing ditches. A large stormwater detention basin will be constructed upstream of the project to combine the required detention from the project and other developments in the area.

The existing signalized intersection at South Kingshighway will be improved as part of the project. Improvements include relocation of a service road, median pavement modifications for turning radii, and new mast arms and signals. Dual left turn lanes will be added to two approaches to accommodate the peak volume of traffic expected.

The intersection of Southern Expressway, Silver Springs Road, and Mt. Auburn Road will also be constructed with this project. The horizontal alignment of Silver Springs Road north of the proposed intersection was redesigned to create a single point intersection. The intersection was designed with three 60-foot wide approaches and one 36-foot wide approach. A preliminary traffic signal design was completed and conduits will be installed to accommodate future installation.
